Nerd Speak - Don't Be Confused!

These are some common terms in the world of web design, coding, and Internet marketing, and yet I find that lots of people are confused about what they actually mean. If you understand these terms, and which items might actually be useful to you, you can save yourself a lot of time when discussing options for your site with potential designers & code writers.

These are my own (very brief) definitions...

CMS stands for Content Management System.
Content management systems come in many flavors, but the essence is this: A CMS allows you, the site owner, to make updates and changes to your own site. The changes could be as simple as altering copy or swappping pictures, or as complex as managing a complete shopping cart program, with prices, inventory, customer lists, sales records, and so forth. Content management is very useful in keeping your site fresh and current, but be sure if and when selecting a CMS that the system makes sense to you! Some CMS systems are complicated to learn; others are so simple that you won't need any help or lessons to be able to use them. Do yourself a favor and ask to see examples of how a particular CMS actually works before you select one!

If you have a term that you think should be added to this list, please don't hesitate to drop me a note and ask me to define it for you! If enough people ask me about the same term, the term will make this page!
